Same Table, Different Side

amaDuring my senior year of college, I was the Vice President of the Saint Mary’s College American Marketing Association Collegiate Chapter.  Every year we would organize the Meet the Firms event, which allowed students to get a glimpse into the real working world by asking questions that will prepare them for a professional career in marketing. They also got an opportunity to network with firms and alumni in order to land a possible internship or a full time job.

Three years later, I found myself back on campus attending the event with my colleague, Erik Rivas (also an alumnus), but this time we were on the other side of the table.  It felt gratifying giving advice and interacting with eager college students because I was in their shoes three years ago.  A few other companies that attended the event include Kara’s Cupcakes, Target and LinkedIn.

If you are a student looking to gain real world knowledge in marketing, I recommend becoming a member of the SMC AMA and attending networking events just like this one. Not only will you be part of a group of people who are passionate about marketing, but you get the opportunity to network with professionals, attend workshops, seminars and special events.  Learn more about SMC AMA.

Walk into 2013 with a BRAND new YOU!

Many of us enter the New Year with resolutions to lose weight, save money, take a trip, etc., but the truth is, most of us never stick to these resolutions.  So, here’s my real challenge for the year – to get rid of empty resolutions, and focus on improving my personal “brand.”

I recently attended the “Dine with Alums” event at Saint Mary’s College, and the keynote speaker was Susan Chritton,.Ed.- she wrote the book, Personal Branding for Dummies in which she explains why branding is so important for corporations, celebrities, and ourselves. (Did I mention that she is a Saint Mary’s alumna?) According to Chritton, branding helps position us for success through image transformation and self-prominence.

“Best Companies to Work For” Say it Loud and Proud via Social Media

It’s “awards season” and aside from trying to pick an early favorite for Best Picture, there are a few other lists published recently that are worth checking out.

One that caught our eye was the Klout Rankings of the Top U.S. & Canadian Employers Using Social Media to Recruit. For our clients and other Talent Acquisition teams looking to develop their social media strategies, this is an extremely helpful reference list to see what other companies are doing and garner some best practices for their own programs.

Around the same time, Fortune® Magazine released their annual rankings of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.

KRT’s Social Media Team thought it would be an interesting exercise to cross-reference the two reports to come up with a short list of great companies that do an incredible job of telling candidates how wonderful it is to work at their company via social media.

Interested in seeing the list?  Please send an email to krtweet@krtmarketing.com with your contact information and we’ll be sure to send the list your way.

10 Predictions for 2012: The Top Trends in Talent Management and Recruiting

As we wind down the year and reflect on 2011, it seemed to be the year of social media in recruitment media space. Even with tighter budgets and just as many jobs to fill, many companies made major shifts both internally and externally by engaging and managing relationships on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. These will still play a major role in recruiting and development best practices and years to come.

As we get into 2012, the mobile platform will come into play more. The number of users of smartphones and tablets continues to grow each day.  In order to get into mobile recruiting, companies will have to ensure they have the bandwidth and correct technology in place (mobile friendly career pages, etc.) to provide the utmost candidate experience.

Is Facebook poised to knock-off recruitment heavyweights?

While Facebook has not yet made its move to go head-to-head with the job board juggernauts, a couple interesting articles on Mashable this month make us wonder how long before Facebook becomes employers’ go-to recruitment resource.

Mashable covered Facebook’s announcement of its partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, which includes “systems where new job postings can be delivered virally through the Facebook site at no charge.”  Depending on how it’s implemented, a Facebook job engine could immediately rival the leading sites in the recruitment space.

Facebook Job Postings

In another article, Mashable cited 7 Reasons Why Recruiters Like Facebook More Than LinkedIn. Although the article focuses on recruiting students and graduates — as Facebook still needs to overcome some significant hurdles to win over recruiters who view LinkedIn as their go-to resource for sourcing seasoned professionals — the survey did make some interesting points for Facebook, including:

  1. It’s more engaging.
  2. Facebook is where the action is.
  3. It’s free.
  4. It’s a bigger network.
  5. It’s more open.
  6. The Like button.
  7. It’s better for branding.

Like everyone in the recruitment industry, we’re anxious to see how Facebook will make its full entry into the space.
